About Tybee Island

Tybee Island, an Atlantic Ocean barrier island, is located only 20 minutes from Historic Savannah, Georgia.  Tybee became the site of the first lighthouse to be erected on the South Atlantic coast - in 1736.  "Tybee" pronounced (Tie-bee) is an Euchee Indian word meaning "salt."  This beautiful island has become home to pirates, soldiers, fishermen, beachcombers, vacationers and local residents over hundreds of years.

The Tybee Island Lighthouse's original structure, built of brick and cedar, was 90 feet high and served as an unlit "day mark" until being destroyed by a storm.  A second lighthouse was built in 1748 and was just the third lighthouse in America.  The lighthouse that stands today is 154 feet high and welcomes ships from around the world into the Port of Savannah.  Tybee Island has many wonderful elements to offer visitors including:  many restaurants, quaint shops, the pier and pavilion, the Tybee Lighthouse & Museum, Civil War era Ft. Pulaski and Fort Screven, Tybee Marine Science Center, fishing, kayaking, dolphin watching, boating, sailing and much more.

For those looking to spend some time visiting Tybee Island, Sea View House offers four completely equipped apartments only 4 houses from miles of sandy beach lined with picturesque sand dunes.  On the beach you will see surfers riding the waves, boaters enjoying the waterways, dolphins playing only a short distance from the shore, fishermen near the pier, and hear music from the pavilion.

There are numerous things to do and occupy your time on Tybee Island - OR just enjoy the sandy beach, sunshine, sea breeze and true relaxation.

Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project:
Five species of sea turtles nest on Georgia's beaches, primarily the Loggerhead Turtle which is currently on the Endangered Species List.

The problem:
When turtle hatchling come out of the nest their instincts direct them to move toward light which, until modern lighting was developed, was the moon and stars reflecting off the ocean.  Today, the direct light from houses near the beach and "sky glow" from coastal cities can confuse the hatchlings and cause them to move inland where their chance of survival is almost nonexistent.
